Trap / Dark

Tap a chord to hear it on its own.

How to use it

Choose the key of your beat and whether it is minor or major. If you are not sure, run the beat or sample through the key finder first. Then pick a style. Each style has a handful of progressions that are common in that genre, and Generate or Shuffle picks one for you.

Press Play to hear a simple pad at your BPM. When it sounds right, press Download MIDI and drag the file onto an instrument in your DAW. The file includes the tempo and a 4/4 time signature, so it lines up with your project grid. From there, change the sound, the rhythm and the voicing to make it your own.

Why the style presets differ

Trap and drill lean on minor keys and plain triads, which keep the low end clear for 808s. R&B and soul use 7th chords and ii–V movements for a smoother feel. Lo-fi adds maj7 and m9 chords for that soft, jazzy colour. Afrobeats and pop often loop four simple, bright chords. These are starting points, not rules.

Options explained

Chords lets you strip everything back to triads or add a 7th to every chord. Smooth voicing picks inversions so the chords move as little as possible between changes, which usually sounds more musical than stacking every chord from its root. Bass note adds the root an octave below, ready to copy to a bass or 808 track.

FAQ

Can I use these chord progressions in beats I sell?

Yes. Chord progressions like i–VI–III–VII are common musical building blocks and are not owned by anyone. The MIDI files you download are yours to use in any project.

How do I open the MIDI file in my DAW?

Drag the .mid file onto an instrument track in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Studio One, Reaper or any other DAW. The file contains the tempo, a 4/4 time signature and one note per chord tone.

What do the Roman numerals mean?

They describe each chord by its position in the key. Upper case is a major chord, lower case is a minor chord, and the degree symbol (°) marks a diminished chord. Because they are relative to the key, the same numerals work in every key.

What is the difference between triads and 7th chords?

A triad has three notes: root, third and fifth. A 7th chord adds a fourth note, which gives a softer, jazzier sound that suits R&B, soul and lo-fi. Trap and drill usually sound best with plain triads.

Why does the bass note option exist?

It adds the root of each chord one octave lower, so you can hear the progression with a simple bass line or copy that part to an 808 or bass track.
